RIG1 is a cytoplasmically bound enzyme that exhibits phospholipase 1/2 activity and catalyzes the hydrolysis of various important membrane lipids including phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine containing lipids. RIG1 mimics PLA1/2 activities in many tissues and is widely expressed. Recent research has shown that RIG1 also functions as a cytoplasmic pattern receptor that detects viral RNA and acts as a cellular sensor for viral infection, which in turn can activate the proinflammatory response and the production of type-1 interferons against the infection.
