Alpha-N-acetylneuraminide alpha-2,8-sialyltransferase (UniProt: Q92185; also known as EC: 2.4.99.8, Alpha-2,8-sialyltransferase 8A, Ganglioside GD3 synthase, Ganglioside GT3 synthase, Sialyltransferase 8A, SIAT8-A, Sialyltransferase St8Sia I, ST8SiaI) I encoded by the ST8SIA1 (also known as SIAT8, SIAT8A) gene (Gene ID: 6489) in human. SIAT8-A is a single-pass type II membrane protein that is strongly expressed in melanoma cell lines, adult and fetal brain, and to a lesser extent in adult and fetal lung. It is involved in the production of gangliosides GD3 and GT3 from GM3. It catalyzes the transfer of sialic acid from CMP-sialic acid to GM3 to produce GD3 and GT3 in a successive manner. It is also involved in the pathway protein glycosylation. SIAT8-A contains a cytoplasmic domain (aa 1-29); a transmembrane domain (aa 30-48); and a lumenal domain (aa 49-356). Two isoforms of SIAT8-A have been described that are produced by alternative splicing. (Ref.: Dorrell, C., et al. (2016). Nat. Commun. 7; 11756).
