C-C Motif Chemokine 4 (CCL4), also known as Macrophage Inflammatory Protein-1beta (MIP-1ß), is a chemokine that signals through the CCR5 receptor. It acts as a chemoattractant for monocytes, natural killer cells, and numerous other immune cells. CCL4 is also an important regulator of macrophage migration. Activated T cells, B cells, and monocytes rapidly synthesize CCL4. After adhering to the laminin found in the basement membrane of blood vessels, neutrophils also synthesize CCL4. It has been noted to have direct antiviral effect against HSV-1 and is one of the main HIV-suppressive factors made by CD8+ T cells.
