Ras-related protein Rab32 is a mitochondrion localized protein that acts as an anchoring protein for protein kinase A regulatory subunit which then plays a role in mitochondrial fission and mitochondrial dynamics of growth and recycling. Rab32 is also involved in phagosome maturation where it is recruited and serves as a lipid anchoring protein for various pathogens. Rab32 is expressed in my tissues in both the adult and the developing fetus. Rab32 is part of the Rab GTPase superfamily of GTP signaling proteins. Interestingly, some human specific pathogens such as Salmonella enterica need to replicate intracellularly and have evolved mechanisms to avoid Rab32/phagosome mediated engulfment and subsequent destruction. It appears to some species deliver an effector protein that cleaves Rab32 and thus are then free to develop intracellular vacuole-like vesicles in which to replicate and avoid destruction.
