Wings apart-like protein homolog (also known as Friend of Epstein-Barr virus nuclear protein 2) is a nuclear protein encoded by the WAPL (WAPAL) gene in human. Wapl functions as a negative regulator of cohesin-chromosome association and facilitates the progression of mitosis both during interphase and prophase. In interphase, Wapl destabilizes cohesin-chromosome interaction and thereby reduces the extent of cohesin-mediated chromosome looping. In prophase, mitotic kinases phosphorylate cohesin and its regulators. Wapl then triggers the release of phosphorylated cohesin from sister chromatids, allowing sister chromosome decatenation by topoisomerase II (Topo II). (PMID 24156811).
