PAOSMC were used to investigate the effects of heparin on smooth muscle cell proliferation, specifically revealing that heparin induces MKP-1 phosphatase that dephosphorylates ERK, decreasing its activity (Blaukovitch, 2010). They were also used to show that normalization of myocardin signaling in the diseased heart by using targeted inhibition of myocardin genes by shRNA restores heart function (Torrado, 2011). Finally, PAOSMC along with Porcine Aortic Endothelial cells, have been used as controls in a study characterizing circulating endothelial progenitor cells (Allen, 2008).Characterization: positive for smooth muscle cell specific alpha-actin expression.
